The DIATROFI Program offers every day school meals all over Greece and promotes healthy nutrition habits.
The malnourishment of children and childhood obesity are two sides of the same coin. According to data collected for the in school year 2016-2017 in schools which participated in the DIATROFI Program and are located in underprivileged areas: 61,1% of our students' families are facing food insecurity while 31% of our students are overweight or obese.
Food insecurity problems have been mitigated, the consumption of healthier foods in children has increased while healthier dietary habits have been adopted by students and their families!
DIATROFI - the Program on Food Aid and Promotion of Healthy Nutrition is implemented in primary and secondary public schools in socioeconomically vulnerable areas across Greece, from Athens all the way to Thrace!
Our meals have been designed by the Prolepsis Institute's scientific requirements in order to cover a significant proportion of students’ daily energy and nutritional needs (according to their age and gender).
The meals are prepared according to the principles for healthy nutrition and the specific characteristics of traditional Greek diet. Τhe specific requirements for the DIATROFI meals are:
- exclusive use of extra virgin/virgin olive oil as the only added source of fat,
- use of >60% whole-wheat flour, of the total flour used, in all bread/bakery products,
- avoidance/absence of added preservatives and artificial additives,
- low sodium and added sugars content.
In particular, the meal consists of a sandwich with cheese and chicken or egg or vegetables (tomato or cucumber), or a vegetable pie; a fresh fruit and milk or yogurt with honey.
The meal abides to high technical standards, which are verified by a strict quality and safety monitoring mechanism.
Since 2012, more than 15 million meals have been distributed to 110.000 students in 650 schools of the country.
